AfD's Thomas Hartung dissects modern Germany in bold new essay collection

Thomas Hartung, a co-founder of the AfD in Saxony and current press spokesman for the party in Baden-Württemberg, has released a new book titled Re-Education Republic: Buntland—Against the Dismantling of Our Own. The work brings together twenty essays critiquing what the author describes as the absurdities of modern society, politics, and culture. Hartung, a self-proclaimed 'arch-liberal conservative', draws on his background in journalism, academia, and political activism to challenge contemporary norms.

The book is structured into three main sections: Society, Politics, and Culture. Each part blends analytical rigour with passionate commentary, tackling subjects like the alleged link between organ donations and voting habits, claims of racism directed at Germans, and the state of public infrastructure such as swimming pools. Hartung's essays also examine how society reacts to racist incidents, offering a provocative take on current debates.

Hartung's credentials lend weight to his arguments. A doctorate holder in contemporary German literature, he has worked as both a journalist and a lecturer. His political career began in 2013 when he helped establish the AfD in Saxony, and since 2020, he has served as the press spokesman for the AfD's parliamentary group in Baden-Württemberg. This dual experience in academia and politics shapes the book's perspective.

The work has already drawn praise from figures like Frank Böckelmann, editor of Tumult magazine. Böckelmann commends Hartung's ability to dissect and caricature modern issues while advocating for what the author sees as a republican ideal. The book's release follows a period of political controversy for the AfD, including a 2022 case in Rhineland-Palatinate where two of its mayoral candidates were barred from running. Election committees questioned their loyalty to the constitution, and courts later upheld the decision.

Re-Education Republic presents Hartung's critique of today's Germany through a mix of sharp analysis and bold prose. The book's three-part structure allows readers to engage with his views on society, politics, and culture in detail. Whether it sparks debate or reinforces existing opinions, the collection offers a distinct perspective from a figure deeply embedded in both political and intellectual circles.
