Sony pulls Studio Canal films as GTA 6 ditches physical copies forever

Sony has announced plans to remove access to hundreds of films and TV shows from its PlayStation Store. From 1 September 2026, users in certain European countries will lose access to previously purchased Studio Canal content. Titles like Attack the Block, Hot Fuzz, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day will disappear from libraries without compensation. The move follows Sony’s past decisions to discontinue digital downloads, which previously sparked consumer backlash. This time, the company has not offered refunds or alternatives for affected customers. The announcement comes as the second-hand market for digital products faces growing challenges due to full digitisation.

Separately, Rockstar has confirmed that *Grand Theft Auto 6* will be sold only in digital form. Physical purchases in stores will include a box with a download code, but no disc. Fans have reacted poorly to both the removal of Studio Canal content and the digital-only release of the highly anticipated game. The decision to go digital-only for *Grand Theft Auto 6* may encourage other publishers to adopt the same approach. The wider issue of retroactively removing purchased digital content remains a major point of contention among consumers.

Starting in 2026, Sony users will no longer access Studio Canal films and shows they have already bought. Grand Theft Auto 6 will also break from tradition by abandoning physical media entirely. These changes highlight the ongoing shift in how digital products are sold and managed.
