CATL resumes lithium mining after securing key production permits

CATL has secured all necessary certificates to restart production at its Jianxiawo lithium mine in Yichun, Jiangxi. The site had been idle since August 10, 2025, after a key mining permit expired the day before. Yichun is a major lithium hub, often referred to as Asia’s lithium capital. The mine first halted operations on August 10, 2025, following the expiry of a critical permit. Workers at the site have since begun training to prepare for production to resume. The Jianxiawo mine is a vital resource for CATL, the world’s largest power battery supplier, holding 40.1% of the global market in early 2025.

CATL has now obtained the most important safety production permit, clearing the final obstacle. Lithium is essential for battery production, a major cost factor in electric vehicles. Rising lithium prices over the past year have also pushed the company to increase its investment in sodium-ion batteries. With all permits now in place, the Jianxiawo lithium mine is set to resume operations. The restart will support CATL’s battery production and its position in the global market. The mine’s output remains crucial for the company’s supply chain.
