Brenner Pass railway shuts down for two weeks of urgent repairs
The Brenner Pass railway line will close for major renovation work from July 17 to August 1. The route between Innsbruck and Bolzano will be out of service during this period. The pass is a key transport link through the Alps for both rail and road traffic. Repair work on the Italian side of the Brenner Pass had been planned for this time. Austria has also moved its maintenance forward to align with the closure. This ensures no extra disruptions for rail services later on.
Ten long-distance trains normally travel the Brenner Pass route to and from Italy each day. During the closure, passengers will use replacement buses between Innsbruck and Bolzano. Bicycles will not be allowed on these buses.
Freight traffic will face large-scale rerouting. Travel times for passengers will increase by about 30 minutes, depending on road conditions on the Brenner Motorway. The closure will last until August 1. Replacement buses will serve passengers, but without bicycle transport. Road and rail traffic will experience delays and diversions during this period.
