Hannover Central Station expansion stalls amid funding deadlock with DB InfraGO
No rail project has moved forward in the latest government talks with DB InfraGO. This includes the stalled expansion of Hannover Central Station, a key transport hub in northern Germany. Critics warn the delay could threaten important upgrades. In March, Deutsche Bahn unveiled plans to expand Hannover Central Station. The proposals included two new tracks, numbered 15 and 16, and an additional platform. These additions are vital for easing congestion at the busy station.
The station handles over 260,000 passengers and around 750 long-distance and regional trains every day. Without the extra tracks, the S-Bahn network in Hannover risks further delays and reliability issues.
Funding for the new infrastructure remains unresolved. The Allianz pro Schiene has publicly criticised the lack of financial support for rail upgrades. Green Party transport expert Swantje Michaelsen has accused the federal government of stalling the project’s planning phase.
The Federal Transport Ministry is currently pushing for more funds in budget discussions. However, no agreement has yet been reached to advance the Hannover expansion or other rail schemes. The failure to progress any rail project leaves the Hannover expansion in limbo. Without funding, the station’s much-needed upgrades cannot proceed. This risks worsening congestion and punctuality for thousands of daily passengers.
