Mumbai: BMC Proposes ₹1.85 Crore Master Plan To Redevelop Powai Lake Promenade After Years Of Neglect

Powai Lake's crumbling promenade set for Rs 1.85-crore makeover by AECOM

The redevelopment of Powai Lake promenade is gaining pace as concerns grow over its worsening state. The area has suffered from neglect, with metro and sewerage works adding to its decline. Powai Lake itself is a major urban water body in Mumbai, covering 223 hectares with a 6.61 sq km catchment area. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed appointing AECOM Asia Company Limited to create a redevelopment master plan for the promenade. The consultancy will cost Rs 1.85 crore. AECOM will prepare a blueprint, hold public consultations, and submit cost estimates within four months.

The promenade, built in 2008, has seen little maintenance or improvement since then. The BMC aims to turn Powai Lake into a financially self-sustaining urban destination. To speed up the process, the civic body seeks exemption from the public tender process, arguing that AECOM’s expertise in waterfront planning justifies direct appointment.

The BMC also recognises the environmental challenges of the project. Its goal is to balance public infrastructure upgrades with the preservation of the lake’s ecology. The BMC’s proposal marks a significant step toward revitalising Powai Lake promenade. If approved, AECOM will begin work on the master plan within the next four months. The project aims to restore the area while ensuring its long-term sustainability.
