Kandelstraße reopens after €7.7M renovation but faces new closures soon
The Kandelstraße road from Waldkirch will fully reopen to traffic on Saturday, June 27. The completion marks the end of a major renovation project that began in 2020 and cost Baden-Württemberg over €7.7 million. The renovation involved multiple phases, upgrading the road surface, drainage systems, shoulders, and retaining walls. A key focus was rockfall protection, with more than 600 hazardous sites secured along the route. Crews stabilised rocks, cleared debris, and installed 3,100 metres of barriers to prevent falls.
Balancing traffic safety, environmental protection, and forestry needs proved challenging. Protective measures were added along the roadside to address these concerns. District Administrator Hanno Hurth described the reopening as a crucial step for the region.
The project required significant investment. The state provided around €7.1 million for construction and an additional €600,000 for planning. Waldkirch’s Lord Mayor Michael Schmieder expressed relief at the completion, stating the work ensures a safe and reliable connection to Mount Kandel for years.
However, another closure is already planned. The Kandelstraße between St. Peter and the mountain pass will shut from Monday, June 29, until mid-September for the next major project. During this time, traffic will be diverted via Glottertal and Waldkirch. The road will reopen on June 27 after extensive upgrades. The investment and protective measures aim to improve safety and reliability for travellers. Further work will begin shortly, requiring temporary closures and diversions.
