Russia cracks down on unsafe buses in sweeping transport safety blitz
The Russian Interior Ministry has carried out a large-scale campaign to improve passenger transport safety. The operation uncovered widespread violations, including illegal bus modifications and unlicensed drivers. Authorities have now taken legal action against multiple offenders. The campaign targeted buses on intercity and international routes. Inspectors found 63 cases of illegal modifications to passenger vehicles. They also detected drivers operating under the influence of alcohol and others without proper licences.
During the checks, 61 buses were seized and 102 licence plates were confiscated. Forged licence plates were discovered on some vehicles. The operation revealed over 22,000 traffic violations in total, with nearly 6,000 linked directly to passenger transport.
Following the inspections, pre-trial investigations were opened in several cases. The ministry has stressed the need for transport operators and all road users to follow safety rules and legal standards. The enforcement drive has led to the removal of unsafe buses from the roads. Legal proceedings are now under way for those found breaking the law. The ministry continues to push for stricter adherence to transport regulations.
