Bremen's Mobility Overhaul Brings Tram Expansions and Major Road Closures

Major transport changes are underway in Bremen as part of the city’s mobility transition. Several key routes, including Steubenstraße and Neuenlander Straße, are closed or restricted to expand the tram network. The updates aim to improve connections and reduce the need for transfers. Steubenstraße, a vital link between Hastedt, Hemelingen, and Vahr, is under construction until 2028. The work will create a direct tram route, eliminating the need for passengers to change lines. As a result, buses 25 and N5 are rerouted, and extensive detours are in place for all road users, including cars, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Neuenlander Straße remains partially closed until at least October 2026. These disruptions contribute to a 15-week delay in reopening Neustädter Bahnhof. Once complete, tram line 2 will operate from Gröpelingen to Neue Vahr Süd, with peak-hour extensions to Tenever. The closures are part of Bremen’s push for a greener transport system. The expanded tram network will serve as a backbone for the city’s mobility plans. Commuters can expect long-term improvements despite the current inconvenience.
