Mumbai's Metro Line 2B achieves breakthrough with massive steel span launch
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a significant milestone in the construction of Metro Line 2B. A 54.25-metre composite steel span was successfully launched across the Central Railway corridor between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations. This marks a key step in expanding Mumbai’s metro network. The operation took place during a carefully planned two-hour railway traffic block between 1 am and 3 am on June 14. Two massive hydraulic cranes, each capable of lifting 500 metric tonnes, worked in tandem to position the 252-tonne span. A standby crane provided additional support.
Extensive coordination with Central Railway authorities ensured the work was completed without disrupting train services. Months of engineering, fabrication, and quality checks preceded the launch, with all safety clearances secured in advance.
Around 30 engineers and technical experts oversaw the operation, supported by nearly 100 workers. The successful installation highlights the engineering expertise needed for large-scale infrastructure in a densely populated city. Phase 1 of Metro Line 2B, a 4.5km stretch from Diamond Garden in Chembur to Mandale, is already in service. The steel span launch is set to speed up construction on the corridor. Once complete, Metro Line 2B will link D N Nagar in Andheri to Mandale in Mankhurd. This progress brings Mumbai closer to an expanded metro system.
