Kiel's 2034 Light Rail Project Gains Momentum with Broad Coalition Support

Kiel’s municipal government is moving forward with plans for a new light rail network. Operations are expected to begin around 2034, marking a significant step in the city’s transport development. A broad coalition is now forming to support the project. The German Transport Club (VCD) North and the Tram for Kiel initiative have called for a civil society alliance to champion the light rail system. The VCD will provide structural support for this coalition. Organisers intend to involve additional partners from business, environmental groups, trade unions, and educational and social organisations.

The goal of the alliance is to secure long-term public acceptance and foster open discussion on planning matters. Advocates describe the light rail as a key part of Kiel’s shift towards climate-friendly transport.

The first line will run from the university through the central train station to Wellingdorf. Estimated costs for the initial phase are roughly €564 million. The majority of these expenses will be covered by federal and state funding. The light rail network is set to launch in 2034. Funding will primarily come from government sources. The project aims to improve Kiel’s transport system while supporting environmental goals.
