Wartburgkreis: Kreistag decides on introduction of 5-Euro school ticket

Wartburgkreis slashes student transport costs to just €5 per ticket

The Wartburgkreis district council has approved a new €5 student ticket for the region. This decision follows a proposal to replace the current €15 student leisure pass with a more affordable option. The move aims to improve mobility for students across the district. The council gave the green light to adjustments in the fare table and tariff regulations. This allows the €5 ticket to be introduced within the Wartburgregion Transport Association's fare zone. It will be valid on school days from 2 p.m. onward.

The governing board of Wartburgmobil gkAöR had already reviewed and prepared for the new ticket. The Wartburgkreis will cover the costs of reducing the price. Around 16,000 students in the area are expected to benefit from the change.

The ticket will launch at the start of the 2026/2027 school year. Officials anticipate at least 1,000 tickets to be purchased in the first year. The new fare is designed to make bus and train travel more accessible for students in their free time. The €5 student ticket will replace the existing €15 pass. It is set to increase public transport use among students. The scheme will provide a cost-effective travel option for thousands of young people in Wartburgkreis.
