Bhopal Municipal Corporation To Develop 30 EV Charging Stations For 50 New E-Cars

Bhopal switches to all-electric fleet for government operations by 2025

Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) will become the first urban local body in Madhya Pradesh to use only electric vehicles for official work. The move is part of a broader plan to replace fuel-powered vehicles with eco-friendly alternatives across the city. The initiative follows directives from Urban Administration Department Commissioner Sanket Bhondve under the Madhya Pradesh Electric Vehicle Policy-2025. BMC will start by building 30 new EV charging stations and procuring 50 electric vehicles in the first phase.

The transport department has already issued tenders for the EVs. The chosen agency will manage the fleet under a three-year contract. The first batch of vehicles will go to senior civic officials, including Additional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and Assistant Commissioners.

Bhopal Smart City will act as an EV aggregator for government departments. It plans to develop a centralised fleet of nearly 2,500 electric vehicles. Through this system, departments can obtain EVs directly at pre-approved lease rates. Smart City and Bhopal City Link Limited (BCLL) will also install around 70 charging stations at key administrative and commercial sites. The project aims to remove fuel-powered vehicles from BMC’s operations. It also seeks to promote the use of electric transport across Bhopal. The new system will provide government departments with easier access to EVs through a streamlined process.
