How Dutch Regulators Proved Tesla FSD Was Safe Before European Approval

Netherlands Approves Tesla's FSD Supervised After Rigorous 18-Month Review

The Netherlands vehicle authority, RDW, has granted European type approval for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised system. This decision comes after an extensive 18-month evaluation process focused on safety and compliance. The approval allows the system’s use across the Netherlands under strict monitoring conditions. The RDW conducted its own independent testing for over 3,000 hours, using specialised equipment across different road types and environments. It also reviewed Tesla’s statistical analysis and validated the findings separately. The testing included data from 1.8 million kilometres driven with FSD Supervised across Europe.

Safety remained the top priority throughout the evaluation. The RDW highlighted Tesla’s strict driver monitoring as a key factor in its decision. As part of the approval, the authority modified standard European legislation, requiring Tesla to report data monthly instead of less frequently.

Since the approval, nearly 40,000 Tesla vehicles with FSD Supervised have driven about 24 million kilometres in the Netherlands. No relevant incidents have been reported during this period. The European type approval also establishes a real-time monitoring framework for advanced driver assistance systems. The approval marks a significant step for Tesla’s technology in Europe. It introduces stricter reporting and monitoring requirements for the company. Nearly 40,000 vehicles are now operating under these new conditions in the Netherlands.
