Kostanay's Bold Plan: A 40-Kilometre Cycling Network to Transform the City
Kostanay is planning a major expansion of its cycling network. The city aims to build a 40-kilometre system linking parks, squares, districts, and residential areas. This project will increase the current bike lane network more than fivefold once finished. The initiative is currently in the planning phase. Officials are incorporating modern technical solutions, road markings, and best practices into the design. Kostanay took inspiration from Almetyevsk, often called Russia’s cycling capital.
The new network promises several benefits. Cycling reduces pollution of roads, soil, and water, improving public health. A 5% drop in car trips could cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by 14,000 tons. Parking efficiency also improves, as one car space can hold ten bicycles.
Economic advantages are clear too. Every kilometre cycled brings a societal benefit of €0.08. In contrast, every kilometre driven reduces it by €0.50. The project will reshape transport in Kostanay. It will create a connected, sustainable system for residents. The expanded network is set to deliver environmental, health, and economic gains for the city.
