Allegheny County declares red alert as extreme heat grips Pittsburgh

Allegheny County has issued a code red heat advisory for June 29, 30, and July 1. Temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees during this period. Residents are urged to take precautions to stay safe in the extreme heat. Five cooling centres will operate in Pittsburgh neighbourhoods from June 29 to July 2. Locations include Beechview, Greenfield, Homewood, Sheraden, and South Side. Each will remain open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

County pools and spray parks are also available seven days a week. They will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., depending on the weather. Residents can find their nearest cooling centre online.

Officials advise drinking plenty of water and reducing time spent outdoors. People should also watch for signs of heat exhaustion. The Department of Human Services will check on older adults and those without homes during the advisory.

Unhoused individuals can visit Second Avenue Commons for water and cooling supplies. The facility will be open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Older adults in need can call for help or go to senior centres. The heat advisory aims to protect vulnerable residents during high temperatures. Cooling centres, pools, and support services are in place to help those at risk. Residents are also encouraged to check on neighbours, friends, and family who may need assistance.
