Germany's A14 motorway extension delayed again until 2032 after decade of setbacks
The A14 motorway extension project has faced another delay, with completion now expected in 2032. The 155-kilometre stretch between Magdeburg and Schwerin has been under construction since 2011. Legal disputes and funding problems have repeatedly pushed back the timeline. Work on the route began in November 2011. The original plan aimed to link Magdeburg, Wittenberge, and Schwerin. However, legal challenges and financial hurdles have caused significant hold-ups.
Some sections are already in use. About 30 kilometres of the 97 kilometres in Saxony-Anhalt are open to traffic. The 26 kilometres in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and 11 kilometres in Brandenburg were finished years ago.
Progress continues this week. On Monday, a six-kilometre section between Lüderitz and Stendal-South will open to drivers. Construction on the 18-kilometre Wittenberge–Karstädt segment in Brandenburg will also start the same day. The total cost of the A14 extension is now estimated at €2.29 billion. The latest completion date has been moved from 2030 to 2032. These adjustments reflect the ongoing challenges in delivering the project on schedule.
