Magadan Region cracks down on illegal fishing with strict new rules
The Magadan Region has introduced strict fishing regulations for the current season. These rules apply to recreational anglers and aim to prevent poaching and illegal trade in aquatic resources. Authorities have also launched a preventive campaign running from June to October. Under the new rules, anglers with a licence can catch up to 15 pink salmon, five chum or coho salmon, or three sockeye salmon per day. Without a permit, the daily limit for red fish is three per person. Each licence holder may buy no more than two permits in a single day, and fishing is banned on designated 'passage days' in each area.
Restrictions also apply to fishing gear. Nets must be registered, with a maximum length of 30 metres, and cannot block river channels or be set in a staggered pattern. Fishing lines may not exceed 0.3 mm in thickness, and hooks are limited to 7 mm in size.
Violations carry heavy penalties. Individuals may face fines up to 5,000 rubles, officials up to 30,000 rubles, and legal entities up to 200,000 rubles. Criminal liability includes potential imprisonment for up to five years, as well as confiscation of fishing gear and vehicles used in offences. Detailed regulations are available on the Okhotsk Territorial Administration’s website. The public is encouraged to report any suspected poaching or illegal fishing activities. Reports can be made to local law enforcement or the Russian Interior Ministry’s Magadan hotline at 69-66-55. The campaign seeks to protect aquatic resources and ensure compliance with the law.
