Uber, Nuro, and Lucid team up to launch robotaxis in Houston by 2027

Uber, Nuro, and Lucid have announced plans to launch a robotaxi service in Houston by mid-2027. The collaboration will use Lucid’s electric vehicles equipped with Nuro’s autonomous driving technology. Riders will access the service exclusively through the Uber app. Lucid will soon start assembling production-validation robotaxis at its Arizona factory. The initial fleet will feature Lucid Gravity electric SUVs, with future midsize EVs added later. Both models will run on Nuro’s Level 4 autonomous driving platform and carry advanced sensors, including cameras, lidar, radar, and a roof-mounted array.

Nuro is already testing nearly 100 vehicles in California and Texas, with some operating on Houston’s public roads under safety supervision. The company’s COO, Andrew Chapin, highlighted Houston’s size and complexity as ideal for refining the autonomous system.

Uber is designing the in-cabin experience, focusing on rider controls and personalisation. The service will also use a 50,000-square-foot depot and charging facility in Houston, secured by Uber for fleet operations. The robotaxi service will launch in Houston as the second city for this partnership. It will rely on Lucid’s electric vehicles, Nuro’s autonomous technology, and Uber’s app-based platform. The project aims to expand with additional vehicle models and features over time.
