New Hampshire Man Fights Rare Powassan Virus After Tick Bite
John Reagan, a 66-year-old outdoorsman from New Hampshire, is recovering in a Boston hospital after contracting Powassan virus from a tick bite. The rare disease caused his condition to worsen quickly, leaving him nonverbal and dependent on medical support for weeks. Reagan fell ill shortly after the bite, as Powassan virus can infect a person within just 15 minutes. Unlike Lyme disease, it has no vaccine or treatment and often leads to severe neurological issues, such as encephalitis. Only seven cases have been reported in 2026, mostly in the Northeast and Great Lakes Region.
After more than a month in hospital, Reagan has shown signs of recovery. He recently opened his eyes and began breathing on his own for the first time in weeks. Friends are now raising funds to help his family with medical costs and to spread awareness about the dangers of tick-borne illnesses. Reagan remains hospitalised but his condition is improving. The case highlights the rapid onset and serious risks of Powassan virus. Efforts to support his family and educate the public about prevention are underway.
