Magadan plants 1,000 trees to honor fallen defenders in global tribute
Nearly 1,000 trees have been planted across the Magadan region since 2020 as part of a global tribute. The effort honours fallen defenders of the homeland, including those from the special military operation. The campaign forms part of the international Garden of Memory initiative. The Garden of Memory campaign is led by the Memory Garden nonprofit, Victory Volunteers, and the Memory of the Victory Commanders Foundation. Over six years, millions of volunteers from 83 countries have planted more than 160 million trees. Its goal is to add over 27 million young trees annually in remembrance of those who defended the Motherland.
In Magadan, Deputy Speaker of the Regional Duma, Victoria Golubleva, oversaw a recent planting event. Fifty saplings of birch and Stalingrad poplar were planted at the Presidential Regional Sports Center. Regional lawmaker Maxim Malakhov coordinated the environmental initiative Clean Country, supporting the effort.
The 2023 events are held under the Year of National Unity in Russia. This year’s plantings continue the campaign’s mission of honouring the fallen through environmental action. The Magadan region has contributed nearly 1,000 trees to the campaign since its launch. The newly planted saplings join a global network of memorial forests. Each tree serves as a lasting tribute to those who lost their lives defending their country.
