Estonia cracks down on 185,500 suspended cars with new fees and taxes

Estonia’s vehicle register currently holds over 185,500 cars with suspended registration. Many of these may soon face new rules and costs under updated transport policies. From 1 July 2027, the Department of Transport will inspect vehicles with suspended registration for seven years or more. Owners of cars that are destroyed, missing, or illegally disassembled can remove them from the register for a fee of 15 euros until 2027. After that, the fee will increase to 800 euros.

Starting in 2027, suspended vehicles will also be subject to auto tax. Over 140,500 of these cars may be taxed as a result. Owners can temporarily remove unused vehicles from the register via an electronic service for 15 euros, avoiding tax for the following year.

Any vehicle not re-registered, temporarily removed, or permanently de-registered by 31 October 2027 will be automatically deleted from the register by 1 November 2027. The new measures aim to clear inactive vehicles from the system. Owners have until late 2027 to act before higher fees or automatic removal apply. The changes will affect thousands of cars currently listed as suspended.
