Astana's unsung heroes keep the city's streets spotless every day
Every day, the streets of Astana are cleaned by a dedicated team of workers and machinery. Among them are Orakai Orazabekov and Kanat Abilmazhinov, two drivers with decades of experience keeping the city tidy. Their work involves long shifts, heavy equipment, and a commitment to public service. Orakai Orazabekov, 61, has driven for the municipal utility since 2005. He operates an Erdemli vacuum road sweeper mounted on a KamAZ chassis. His route covers Republic Avenue, Zhenis Avenue, and Abai Avenue, along with several other streets, ensuring they remain free of debris.
Kanat Abilmazhinov, 53, has worked for Astana Tazalyk since 2001. He drives a street-flushing truck, making six trips to a water pumping station during each shift. Each trip takes around an hour and a half, covering dozens of kilometres. His route includes Republic Avenue, a landfill on the Astrakhan Highway, Kenesary Street, and Bogenbai Batyr Avenue.
In 2015, Kanat assisted a woman whose car had skidded into a ditch during a blizzard. Both drivers value the stability of their jobs and the respect they have earned over the years. They are part of a larger effort, with 600 workers and 250 pieces of equipment deployed daily to maintain Astana’s cleanliness. The city relies on experienced drivers like Orazabekov and Abilmazhinov to keep its streets clean. Their daily routines involve long hours, specialised vehicles, and a strong sense of duty. This system ensures Astana remains well-maintained for its residents.
