Slovakia's Mochovce 4 nuclear reactor begins fuel loading for launch
Slovenské elektrárne has started loading nuclear fuel into the fourth unit of the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant. The first fuel assembly was placed in the reactor on 29 June at 15:45 local time. This move follows the commissioning permission granted by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic on 22 May. Construction of the first two units at Mochovce began in 1982, with units 3 and 4 starting in 1986. Unit 3 entered commercial operation in October 2023. Now, the focus shifts to unit 4 as it progresses towards full functionality.
Once all the fuel is loaded, active reactor tests will commence. The commissioning process will involve gradually increasing power output. A 144-hour demonstration run at full capacity will follow before the unit becomes fully operational.
Branislav Strýček, Chairman and CEO of Slovenské elektrárne, highlighted the significance of the fourth unit. He described it as a key chapter in the development of Slovakia’s energy sector. When operational, Mochovce 4 will contribute to Slovakia’s energy mix, with nuclear power providing 77.5% of the country’s electricity consumption. Each of the plant’s units can supply 13% of Slovakia’s electricity needs at full capacity. This addition strengthens the nation’s energy independence and stability.
