Maharashtra Govt Initiates Integrated Bus Transport System To Connect Multiple Operators Across Mumbai Metropolitan Region

Maharashtra Unveils Integrated Bus Network for Mumbai's Seamless Travel

The Maharashtra Government has launched a new initiative to develop an integrated bus transport system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The project aims to improve connectivity and create a seamless travel experience for millions of daily passengers. It forms part of the Growth Hub programme, with MMR selected as the pilot city-region. The initiative will be implemented under the G-HUB programme. Two dedicated groups have been formed to oversee its development. The Study Group, led by the General Manager of BEST, will focus on policy and financial matters. This includes designing a common fare structure and a revenue-sharing mechanism.

The Technical Group, made up of representatives from various municipal transport undertakings, will handle operational aspects. Their tasks include rationalising routes, synchronising bus schedules, and exploring technology integration. They will also assess opportunities for infrastructure sharing. This group is expected to complete its examination by July 15, 2026.

The integrated system is designed to complement existing investments in metro, suburban rail, and other mass transit projects. It will create a multimodal network that enhances commuter convenience and reduces travel complexities. Once operational, the system is set to benefit millions of commuters. It will improve connectivity between cities, provide better access to employment centres, and reduce reliance on private vehicles. The initiative also supports sustainable urban mobility across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
