Sony's live service game failures force a major strategy rethink

Sony has faced significant setbacks with its live service games. The company recently shut down Destiny 2, once seen as one of its biggest successes in the genre. These struggles come despite ongoing efforts to refine its approach to live service titles. In 2025, Sony cancelled eight out of twelve planned live service games. The decision followed persistent challenges in the genre, with many releases failing to meet expectations. CFO Lin Tao admitted that past live service games simply were not good enough.

Despite these issues, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino has reaffirmed the company’s commitment. He stated that Sony still wants to develop live service games. Nishino also revealed plans to explore ways of revitalising older titles in the category.

Analyst Tao had previously expressed optimism about the future of live service games. However, the shutdown of Destiny 2 and recent layoffs contradicted this view. Tao now suggests that Sony must learn from its mistakes to improve future content. Sony remains determined to release live service games going forward. The company aims to address past shortcomings and breathe new life into existing titles. The path forward will depend on its ability to apply lessons from recent failures.
