MCZMA Clears Design Changes For Marine Drive Tunnel Project, Recommends Sea-Side Promenade Expansion To Centre

Mumbai's Orange Gate-Marine Drive Tunnel Gets Design Approval for Better Connectivity

The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has approved design changes for the P D’Mello Orange Gate-Marine Drive underground tunnel. This project is a vital part of Mumbai’s future East-West connectivity network. It aims to reduce travel time between South Mumbai and the eastern suburbs while easing congestion on P D’Mello Road. The revised design includes a lane reconfiguration on Marine Drive, shifting to a 3+3+3+4 arrangement. This adjustment is intended to manage the expected increase in traffic once the tunnel opens. The project also seeks to improve overall traffic distribution across the city’s growing road system.

The MCZMA granted CRZ clearance for the underground road alignment under strict conditions. These include the implementation of a traffic management plan and the installation of noise barriers. Additionally, the authority has proposed a sea-side promenade extension to the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for final approval.

The proposed promenade would stretch approximately 120 metres in length and up to 60 metres in width, covering nearly 2,298 square metres. Since it falls within the CRZ-IB intertidal area, it requires a separate approval process. The project moves forward with key clearances in place. Once complete, it will enhance connectivity and ease traffic flow in one of Mumbai’s busiest corridors. The promenade extension, if approved, will further support the city’s infrastructure development.
