Italian Chef Rejects Delay of Germany Launch

Italo Challenges Germany's ICE with 2028 High-Speed Rail Debut

Italo, the Italian high-speed train operator, is set to enter the German market in 2028. The company aims to rival Germany’s ICE services but faces key hurdles before its launch. Its CEO has ruled out a three-year delay to the planned start date. Italo has already invested over €25 million in its German expansion. Preliminary agreements with Siemens are in place to begin production in July 2027. However, the company needs a long-term track allocation to proceed on schedule.

Unlike Germany’s current annual renewals, Italo is demanding a 10- to 15-year commitment for track access. Without this by the end of June 2026, production could be delayed. CEO Gianbattista La Rocca insists the 2028 launch will not be pushed back, despite the risks to timing, costs, and strategy. The success of Italo’s German launch depends on securing long-term track rights soon. A delay would disrupt its production plans with Siemens and increase financial pressure. The company remains determined to meet its original 2028 target.
