Krasnoyarsk Airport Faces Critical Runway Decision by 2028
Krasnoyarsk Airport, a major transport hub in Siberia, has served over 4 million passengers in the past two years. Officials are now weighing options for its future, with a key decision looming over the runway’s fate. The airport’s current runway requires a major overhaul or replacement by 2027–2028. Its regulatory service life expires in 2028, though ongoing repairs keep it functional for now. To avoid shutting down operations, authorities are considering constructing a new runway rather than renovating the existing one.
A federal concession agreement has been proposed for the project, aiming to boost regional development and air connectivity. The most favoured option involves keeping the existing runway operational while building a new one beside it. This would prevent disruptions to airport services.
Archaeological surveys were carried out between April and June 2023 across the runway, taxiway, and old international terminal. The excavation covered 114 square metres, but no significant finds were expected due to prior industrial activity in the area. Krasnoyarsk authorities and the federal government must soon decide between building a new runway or reconstructing the old one. They will also determine who will fund the project, which requires tens of billions of rubles, and under what terms. The chosen solution will shape the airport’s capacity and operations for years to come.
