Leipzig-Halle: Some platforms too short for new S-Bahn trains

New Mireo trains face boarding chaos due to short platforms in Halle

New Mireo trains now run between Halle and Leipzig, but their length has caused boarding issues at several stations. Some platforms in northern Halle are too short, leading to temporary restrictions for passengers. The changes have so far had little effect on daily travel. The Mireo trains measure around 140 metres, exceeding the platform lengths at Steintorbrücke, Dessauer Brücke, Zoo, Wohnstadt Nord, and Trotha stations. As a result, the rear section of the trains will stay closed between Halle Central Station and Halle-Trotha. Passengers must board the front section or switch from the rear to the front at Halle Central Station.

Work is already underway to address the problem. Platforms at Trotha and Steintorbrücke will be extended, while new platforms will be built at Wohnstadt Nord, Zoo, and Dessauer Brücke by summer 2028. A new platform at Halle-Südstadt is also planned but will not be finished until late 2028. Until then, the temporary boarding restrictions will remain in place.

Most travellers use the route between Halle and Leipzig, with only a few continuing to the northern stops. Efforts are being made to keep passengers informed about the boarding adjustments. The temporary measures will last until at least summer 2028. Platform upgrades and new constructions aim to resolve the issue. Until then, passengers are advised to follow the boarding guidelines to avoid disruption.
