Why Only 7% of Businesses Have Fully Deployed AI Across Operations
AI adoption in business remains uneven, with only a small fraction achieving full deployment. While 88% of organisations use AI in at least one area, just 7% have rolled it out across their entire enterprise. The gap highlights challenges as the technology scales up. In 2022, banks saw a shift in customer expectations towards more intelligent, conversational services. At the same time, boards came under pressure to define AI strategies quickly. Regulators also stepped up oversight, focusing on explainability, resilience, and operational control.
Experimentation in banking surged after the public release of large language models. Yet many proofs of concept struggled to move beyond controlled environments into full production. Data fragmentation, not model performance, emerged as the primary barrier to success.
European banks gained a structural edge in AI deployment thanks to existing regulatory frameworks. Meanwhile, generative AI had already been in use before 2022, dispelling the notion it was a new arrival that year. As AI grows, economic and governance constraints become harder to ignore. The disparity between limited trials and enterprise-wide adoption persists. Banks continue to navigate technical, regulatory, and strategic hurdles to scale the technology effectively.
