Yossi Klein Halevi is a well-known writer and public figure in Israel and the United States. Born in 1953 in Brooklyn to Hungarian Jewish immigrants, he has authored several influential books on Israeli society, spirituality, and the conflict with Palestine. As a teenager, Klein Halevi became active in Jewish causes. He campaigned for Soviet Jews’ rights and joined the Jewish Defense League. Later, he followed the radical teachings of Meir Kahane, an experience he explored in Memoirs of a Jewish Extremist (1995).
In 1982, he moved to Israel, where he deepened his spiritual and political reflections. His 2001 book At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden documents his journey through Christian and Islamic traditions in the region. Another major work, Like Dreamers (2013), recounts the story of Israeli paratroopers who captured Jerusalem’s Old City during the 1967 Six-Day War.
In 2018, Klein Halevi published Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor, a collection of essays addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The book argues that lasting peace depends on mutual recognition of each side’s pain and aspirations. It ends with responses from Palestinians worldwide who answered his call for dialogue. Klein Halevi remains a significant voice in discussions about Israel and Palestine. His works continue to shape conversations on identity, faith, and coexistence. While widely recognised in Israel and the US, his influence in German discourse is less pronounced.
