Why Your Cucumber Plants Drop Ovaries—and How to Fix It
Gardening expert Alexander Sidelnikov has shared advice on common cucumber-growing mistakes with 360.ru. A member of the Russian Botanical Society, he highlighted issues many growers face with their plants. His insights focus on why cucumbers sometimes drop their ovaries and how to respond correctly. Sidelnikov explained that cucumber plants often shed their ovaries due to unsuitable temperature or humidity. Many gardeners assume the problem stems from a lack of nutrients. This leads them to apply fertiliser, which does not solve the issue and can make it worse.
He warned that mineral nitrogen fertilisers can cause nitrate buildup in the fruit if used incorrectly. These should only be applied two to three weeks before harvest. For plants dropping ovaries, he recommended growth stimulants like Epin, Zircon, or Gibbersib instead. The expert’s advice clarifies that yellowing or dropping ovaries are not signs of nutrient deficiency. Using the wrong treatment can harm the plants and affect fruit quality. Proper environmental conditions and targeted stimulants offer better solutions.
