Legendary ArmA: Cold War Assault gets a modern remaster with open-source twist

A remastered version of ArmA: Cold War Assault is currently in development. The original game, first released as Operation Flashpoint in June 2001, was a pioneering military simulator with an open-world design. It allowed players to engage in combined-arms warfare, driving tanks, flying helicopters, and commanding squads across vast islands. Operation Flashpoint stood out as one of the first titles to blend realistic combat with an expansive, explorable environment. Its success led to the rebranding as ArmA: Cold War Assault, a name it carries today.

The remastered edition brings modern improvements. Its source code has been updated to C++20 and now supports Windows x64 and Linux x64 platforms. Bohemia Interactive has also released the full engine source code on GitHub, making it accessible to developers and modders.

A demo of the remastered version is already available. This demo doubles as an asset pack, giving modders new tools to create content. Additionally, ArmA Reforger, a testing ground for ArmA 4, recreates some of the original game’s iconic locations. The remastered Cold War Assault offers enhanced features and broader platform support. The release of its source code and the demo’s asset pack expand opportunities for modding and development. These updates ensure the game’s legacy continues while paving the way for future projects like ArmA 4.
