Maharashtra Transport Update: MSRTC Extends 10 Per Cent Fare Hike Until July 15 Amid Rising Fuel Costs And Operational Expenses

Maharashtra extends 10% bus fare hike despite financial losses

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation has extended its 10% seasonal fare increase until July 15, 2026. This decision will affect millions of daily passengers, especially those in rural areas. The move comes amid ongoing financial struggles for the state-run transport body. MSRTC first introduced the 10% fare hike to boost revenue. However, the measure has done little to ease its financial strain. In April 2025, the corporation recorded a profit of Rs 14 crore without any seasonal fare rise. But by April 2026, despite the increased fares, it reported a loss of Rs 76 crore.

The current fare structure remains unchanged. Adults still pay a minimum of Rs 14, while children are charged Rs 7. The fare per stage for ordinary and midi bus services stays at Rs 11.05. The extended fare hike is expected to reignite discussions about its long-term benefits. MSRTC continues to face financial difficulties despite the price adjustment. The decision will impact commuters across Maharashtra for another year.
