Businesses Shift to Hourly Clean Energy Matching for Real Impact

A shift is underway in how businesses source clean electricity. Companies are now focusing on time-based performance rather than just volume-based claims. This change marks a new phase in corporate energy strategies. Climate Group recently launched the expanded 24/7 Carbon-Free Coalition. Eight major companies, including Unilever, have joined the initiative. Unilever aims to better align its clean electricity use with demand across its operating markets.

The coalition will provide support through peer networking, knowledge sharing, and technical advice. Its goal is to help businesses adopt hourly matched clean energy solutions. Over the past year, the number of businesses recording electricity on an hourly matched basis has tripled to more than 1,500 globally.

Energy suppliers are also adapting to this trend. The number offering hourly matching tariffs has quadrupled in the past year. The UK currently leads with the highest number of such tariffs available.

The next challenge for companies will be executing hourly matched clean power across different markets. This requires coordination between varying energy systems. Hourly matched clean power is set to become a key part of corporate energy strategy. Companies involved have committed to measuring and reporting hourly matched electricity use in at least one market within two years. The coalition’s efforts will likely accelerate this transition further.
