Berlin launches express trains to ease S-Bahn construction chaos
Berlin is set to introduce extra express trains to reduce travel disruptions during construction on the S-Bahn network. The work near Schöneweide has forced many passengers onto slower replacement buses. The new service aims to ease delays and improve connections. From 22 June to 5 July, Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn GmbH (Odeg) will run an hourly express train between Schönefeld, Schöneweide, and Ostkreuz. This will fill a 36-minute gap in the current regional train timetable.
The construction has caused major inconvenience for travellers. Replacement buses take about 23 minutes to cover the Schöneweide to Ostkreuz route, compared to just six minutes by train. Passengers have also faced multiple transfers and longer journey times. The temporary express service will restore faster travel options between key stations. It should cut waiting times and reduce reliance on buses. The measure is part of Berlin’s efforts to limit disruption during the construction period.
