NMMC's Textile Recycling Facility Showcased As National Model At Summit In New Delhi

Navi Mumbai's Textile Recycling Facility Sets National Benchmark for Waste Management

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) Textile Recycling Facility (TRF) has been highlighted as a model for managing textile waste at a national summit. The project, developed with the Union Ministry of Textiles, was presented by Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde. He was also recognised by the Union Textiles Minister for the initiative’s success. The TRF is one of India’s first pilot projects under the Textile Committee. It has set up a dedicated system for collecting textiles, improving segregation, and recovering materials for recycling and reuse. Over 50,000 households in Navi Mumbai are already part of the scheme.

The facility has also created jobs by training more than 300 women to make products from discarded textiles. This has provided them with sustainable livelihoods while supporting waste reduction.

Dr Shinde emphasised the importance of urban local bodies in the textile recycling process. He called for better public-private partnerships to boost the circular economy. Under his leadership and with Deputy Commissioner Smita Kale’s supervision, the project aims to inspire similar efforts across the country. The NMMC’s TRF demonstrates how cities can manage textile waste effectively. Its success has led to calls for replication at state and national levels. The initiative combines environmental benefits with economic opportunities for local communities.
