British Columbia braces for drought as water restrictions gain public support
British Columbia faces a heightened risk of drought this summer. Officials have warned that low snowpack, early snowmelt, and warm temperatures could strain water supplies. Most residents appear to back measures to conserve water. Vancouver introduced strict water rules in May. These include bans on washing vehicles, watering lawns, and filling swimming pools. The city aims to reduce usage during dry conditions.
A recent Leger survey gathered responses from over 1,500 Canadians between 12 and 15 June. It found that 90 per cent of people in B.C. support the local water restrictions. However, only 38 per cent agree with banning watering for vegetable gardens. The survey highlights strong public backing for most conservation efforts. Yet, resistance remains for limits on garden watering. The province continues to monitor drought conditions as summer progresses.
