Deutsche Bahn's Rhine line shutdown to disrupt travel for months in 2026
Deutsche Bahn has announced major construction work on the right-bank Rhine line. The project will begin in June 2026 and last until December of the same year. Replacement bus services will operate during the closure to help affected passengers. The right-bank Rhine line between Wiesbaden and Troisdorf will undergo renovation starting in June 2026. From 10 July to 11 December, extensive rail replacement services will be in place. In Mainz, coordinators have already been deployed to provide on-site information about these services.
Deutsche Bahn’s corporate representative, Ismail Ertug, has spoken about the broader challenges. He previously served as an MEP for the SPD. According to him, improvements to the rail network will not be visible in the short term. He also estimates that a decade of continuous construction will be needed to modernise the entire system.
This year alone, over 26,000 construction sites are affecting the network in Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland. The region’s rail infrastructure received below-average grades in 2025. A similar number of construction sites is expected in the coming years. The company aims to improve reliability through better coordination and communication. Passengers can expect ongoing disruption as work continues across the network. The long-term goal is to enhance the rail system’s condition after years of upgrades.
