Microsoft: How much RAM your Windows laptop really needs

Microsoft now says 8GB RAM is enough for everyday Windows laptops

Microsoft has updated its guidance on RAM requirements for Windows laptops. The company now claims 8GB is enough for everyday use, marking a shift from its earlier stance. This change follows comparisons with Apple’s MacBook Neo, which also performs well with 8GB of RAM. Previously, Microsoft had suggested 16GB as the minimum for a smooth Windows 11 experience. It even recommended 32GB for gamers in a blog post from February 2026, though this advice was later removed. The company now states that 8GB delivers a responsive experience for normal tasks.

Microsoft also highlights that 16GB or more is beneficial for multitasking and demanding applications. This includes running advanced AI features like Copilot+. To support its claims, the company commissioned a report comparing the MacBook Neo to Windows 11 laptops with 16GB of RAM.

Despite its new recommendations, Microsoft has released its own laptop with 8GB of RAM. The device starts at $1,299, a higher price than Apple’s $599 MacBook Neo, which reviewers praised for its performance with the same amount of memory. The updated guidelines suggest 8GB of RAM is sufficient for most users. Laptops with 16GB or more remain better suited for intensive workloads and AI features. Microsoft’s own hardware choices and comparisons reflect this adjusted stance.
