DB Electric Trains Roll Through Ahr Valley Three Months Early - Ahr Valley railway electrifies RB 30 route three months ahead of schedule
The Ahr Valley railway line is set for a major upgrade this weekend. From Sunday, March 15, 2026, the RB 30 route between Bonn, Remagen, and Ahrbrück will switch to full electric operation—three months ahead of schedule. The change follows extensive rebuilding after severe flood damage in 2021.
The RB 30 line has undergone a complete transformation since the 2021 floods. Crews rebuilt large sections between Walporzheim and Ahrbrück, installing modern signalling systems and overhead electric lines. This upgrade allows the new Talent 2 electric trains to replace diesel services, offering a seamless journey without transfers.
The shift to electric comes sooner than expected. Originally planned for mid-2026, the launch was moved forward, bringing the Ahr Valley in line with the RB 32 route, which has run fully electric since December 2021. Trans Regio Deutsche Regionalbahn GmbH operates both lines, ensuring consistency across the network. Local officials have welcomed the change. Cornelia Weigand, district administrator of Ahrweiler, praised the move as a significant step forward for the region. The new trains will begin service this Sunday, marking the end of diesel operations on the route.
The electrification of the RB 30 line completes a key phase in the Ahr Valley's recovery. Passengers will now travel between Bonn and Ahrbrück on modern electric trains, with no need for transfers. The upgrade also aligns with broader efforts to modernise and improve reliability on the network.
