The Nasdaq and S&P 500 have hit fresh highs, but the rally is being carried by just a few stocks. A small group of mega-cap companies, particularly those linked to artificial intelligence, are powering the gains. Meanwhile, the broader market remains far less buoyant. This year’s market strength has largely come from the information technology sector, with additional support from materials. Within tech, AI-related stocks and infrastructure giants have dominated. Companies like Alphabet, Nvidia, Amazon, and Apple are leading the charge, while most other areas see little movement.
Berkshire Hathaway, now under CEO Greg Abel, holds a record $400 billion in cash—mostly in U.S. Treasuries. Abel believes current equity prices are too high, preferring to wait for better opportunities. He has also warned that the market’s heavy reliance on a handful of mega-cap and AI-driven stocks is unsustainable. Despite the narrow rally, AI stocks are expected to keep the bull market alive through the rest of the year. Their continued performance could mask weaker conditions across the rest of the market.
The record-breaking gains in major indices are not reflected across the entire market. Only a select few companies, mostly in AI and tech, are driving growth. Investors like Berkshire Hathaway remain cautious, holding cash until broader opportunities emerge.
