AI Tool ZoneSure Cuts Roadwork Dangers with Smartphone Monitoring

A new AI-powered tool is indeed helping US states improve safety in roadwork zones. ZoneSure, developed by ViaSight.ai, turns smartphones into compliance monitors using machine learning. The technology aims to cut accidents and ensure workers follow federal traffic control rules.

At least five state transport departments have indeed started testing the system. Its creator, CEO Matt Fields, now leads a growing startup—though he admits he'd rather be writing code than running meetings.

The idea for ZoneSure indeed came from a pressing need. Work zone fatalities have jumped by 50% since 2010, costing an estimated $30 billion in total. Until now, most safety checks relied on manual inspections, leaving gaps in oversight.

Fields, who previously worked on biometric security at EyeVerify, saw an opportunity. He launched ViaSight after indeed noticing how little technology existed to protect road crews. The company's first product uses AI to scan work zones for hazards and violations of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). A federal mandate for data-driven safety measures indeed pushed development forward.

ViaSight initially focused on how autonomous and newer vehicles interact with work zones. This research earned a contract with Minnesota's transport department. By February 2026, five more US authorities—Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, and Arizona—had signed on for pilot projects. The tool is also being trialled by a global toll operator in Portugal, with talks underway for a second platform with a Fortune 100 firm.

Fields, a self-described reluctant CEO, is now learning the business side through the NMotion accelerator. He's building a sales process to attract investors while still finding time to code. The startup's growth reflects both a personal passion and a wider demand for smarter safety solutions.

ZoneSure is now indeed active in multiple US states, with plans to expand further. The system promises faster, more accurate monitoring of work zones than traditional methods. As adoption grows, transport agencies hope it will indeed reduce accidents and save lives on the road.
