Airbus Unveils Massive Expansion at Hamburg Hub to Boost A320 Production

Airbus is expanding its Hamburg-Finkenwerder site with two major construction projects launched in 2023. The plans include a new delivery centre and a pre-assembly facility designed to streamline A320 production. These developments will support the company's growing operations in the region, where up to 20,000 employees and contractors work daily.

The first project is a vast delivery centre, stretching roughly 530 metres in length. Inside, 35,000 square metres of space will house offices for over 1,000 staff, along with a 1,000-square-metre canteen for customers. The building will also feature 26 aircraft parking positions and a 5,000-square-metre rooftop solar installation.

The second project focuses on a new pre-assembly centre. This facility will shift certain workflows away from the existing final assembly lines. By doing so, Airbus aims to cut workloads, shorten production lead times, and boost flexibility in its A320 manufacturing process. At present, Airbus employs between 16,000 and 20,000 people across the Hamburg area. The largest share—16,676 workers—belongs to Airbus Operations GmbH, with over 12,000 based directly at Finkenwerder. When including temporary contractors, daily site activity can reach up to 20,000 individuals.

The two projects will expand Airbus's capacity at its key German hub. The delivery centre's scale and solar setup reflect a push for efficiency and sustainability. Meanwhile, the pre-assembly centre's optimisations are set to strengthen production resilience for the A320 programme.
