Almaty's Avtobys system revolutionizes public transport with digital fares
Almaty has launched a new digital fare system for public transport called Avtobys. The pilot programme began on 1 September 2024, starting with 15 selected bus and tram routes. The change aims to make payments easier and reduce the need for paper tickets or in-person visits.
The Avtobys system allows passengers to pay in multiple ways. Options include bank cards, transit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Smartphone users can also scan QR codes, tap via NFC, connect through Bluetooth, or use the Avtobys mobile app.
Discounts for concessionary fares can now be applied online. This removes the requirement for physical documents or trips to ticket offices. The system will first operate on a limited number of routes before expanding across the entire city.
City officials have highlighted the benefits of the new technology. It increases transparency in trip accounting and simplifies oversight for transport authorities.
The digital payment system is now active on 15 routes in Almaty. Over time, it will replace older methods and cover all public transport in the city. Passengers will no longer need cash or paper tickets for most journeys.
