Almaty's bus depot exposed for failing critical emission standards
Almaty’s Municipal Bus Depot No. 3 has faced scrutiny after inspections revealed dozens of buses failing emission standards. The checks, carried out by Eco Almaty LLP, uncovered 50 vehicles operating without catalytic converters. This follows earlier fines against two transport firms for similar violations last year. Eco Almaty LLP conducted the latest round of inspections as part of ongoing efforts to enforce air quality regulations. Out of 249 buses examined at the depot, 18.8% lacked the required catalytic converters. These devices are essential for reducing harmful exhaust emissions.
The city’s administration, known as the akimat, holds responsibility for regularly monitoring vehicle compliance with emission rules. This is not the first time transport operators in Almaty have faced penalties for breaches. In a previous case, NEO City TRANS LLP and TALAP T LLP were fined a combined 13.3 million tenge for exceeding emission limits. The findings highlight persistent challenges in maintaining clean air standards across the city’s public transport fleet.
The inspection results mean further action may be taken against non-compliant operators. With nearly one in five buses at the depot failing checks, authorities will likely push for stricter enforcement. The akimat’s oversight role will remain under scrutiny as Almaty continues efforts to improve air quality.
