Altai Republic launches 2026 road and bridge overhaul under national initiative

The Altai Republic has announced a major push to upgrade its roads and bridges in 2026. Three regional projects under the national Infrastructure for Life initiative will target repairs, safety improvements, and infrastructure development. Work will span highways, local routes, and key river crossings across the region.

One of the largest projects involves a 10-kilometre upgrade of the Saratan–Yazula road in Ulagan District. Crews will also repair a nearly 6-kilometre stretch of the Biysk–Turochak–Verkh-Biysk regional highway in Turochak. This section will receive fresh asphalt, new sidewalks, pedestrian paths, traffic lights, and bus shelters.

Bridge repairs will focus on structures crossing the Aylu and Yabogan rivers, along with smaller waterways. In total, 378.6 metres of bridges will be brought up to standard. The plan also includes fixing potholes and damaged surfaces on the road leading to Cemetery No. 3 in Gorno-Altaisk.

Under the Systemic Road Infrastructure Development project, traffic enforcement cameras will be installed to monitor violations. The Road Safety initiative will continue efforts to cut accidents. Overall, 21 sites will see construction or repairs as part of the Regional and Local Road Network project, covering 59 kilometres of regional roads and 3.9 kilometres of local routes.

The upgrades aim to improve travel conditions across the Altai Republic. Nearly 60 kilometres of regional roads, dozens of bridges, and key urban routes will be repaired or modernised. The projects are scheduled to roll out through 2026 as part of broader national infrastructure goals.
