American Airlines defies IRS setbacks with record $54.6B revenue in 2025

American Express has reported strong financial results for 2025, despite facing challenges from the IRS. The company achieved record revenue while expanding its premium services and fleet. New upgrades and a luxury cabin product have positioned the airline for further growth.

The airline closed 2025 with a net income of $111 million, marking a solid recovery. Excluding special items, profits reached $237 million for the year, with $106 million earned in the fourth quarter alone. However, the IRS shutdown earlier in the year cut into revenue, costing the company $325 million.

Revenue hit an all-time high of $14 billion in Q4, bringing the full-year total to $54.6 billion. This growth came alongside major investments in premium travel. In June 2025, American Express launched the Flagship Suite, a luxury cabin designed for long-haul flights. The suite had first debuted in 2024 on select Boeing 777-300ERs, setting a new benchmark for in-flight comfort.

The airline is also upgrading its fleet, including Boeing 777-300ERs, 777-200ERs, Airbus A319s, and A320s. These improvements aim to increase premium seating capacity and attract higher-paying passengers. Beyond aircraft, American Express is expanding its network, with a focus on the new Terminal F at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

Customer engagement has grown as well. Enrolment in the AAdvantage loyalty programme rose by 7% year-over-year, reflecting stronger passenger retention and interest.

The company's financial performance in 2025 demonstrates resilience amid external pressures. With record revenue, fleet upgrades, and a growing premium market, American Express is reinforcing its position in the industry. The expansion of luxury offerings and infrastructure suggests continued focus on high-value travel in the coming years.
