Anapa's beaches reopen after major restoration following oil spill cleanup
Anapa’s beaches have undergone major restoration ahead of the summer season. Over 8.4 kilometres of coastline received fresh sand after an oil spill in the Kerch Strait. Officials now confirm the area is ready for visitors from June 1st onwards. The restoration followed a large-scale oil spill that affected the region’s shores. Authorities responded by adding a thick layer of sand to the beaches. Rospotrebnadzor, Russia’s consumer watchdog, recommended a minimum depth of half a metre for the new sand to ensure safety.
Studies later confirmed the effectiveness of the work. Dmitry Chernyshenko, Russia’s vice-premier, claimed the sand in Anapa is now cleaner than on the French Riviera. He also highlighted that sea resorts remain a top holiday choice for Russians. Svetlana Maslova, head of the Anapa resort, released an updated map showing which beaches are open for swimming. Pebble beaches from Maly Utrish to the Central Beach are now accessible to both residents and tourists.
The restored beaches will welcome visitors starting this month. Official checks confirmed the sand’s quality, meeting regulatory standards. The project aims to ensure a safe and clean seaside experience for holidaymakers in Anapa.
